The need of travel insurance cannot be undermined if you are planning a trip abroad. Whether it is a business trip, a family trip or a honeymoon travel, you need to insure your travel. Insuring travel would mean to protect your travel from uncertainties, which can create a mess in your travel plan. Hence travel insurance is very much important.
Let's start with the definition of travel insurance. A travel insurance works like any other insurance policies. They charge you certain amount and insure your travel. In simple words, travel insurance insures you against risks that a traveler might face during his travel. Situations like checked baggage loss, checked baggage delay, trip cancellation, medical emergencies, etc, could ruin your holiday. Travel insurance is just meant for that.
Travel insurance provides protection from unexpected losses during traveling. The policy will bear the expenses and pay you for the loss incurred. A good travel insurance policy basically covers the following: trip cancellation, trip delay, checked baggage loss, checked delay, passport loss, medical cover, cashless hospitalization, personal accident, personal liability, financial emergency assistance, etc. Some travel insurance companies also provide the benefits of dental treatment, home insurance (building and content), etc.
Travel insurance charge a certain amount of money as premium. The premium depends on various factors; age, travel destination, travel period, and the coverage provided, etc. There are some companies that charge on a slab basis, which is pre-defined for particular travel duration. Other charge on pay-per-day basis, which means that you pay premium only for the number of days traveled. Say for example, you are traveling for 15 days. And let's presume the slab offered by the insurance provider is 10-20 days, 20-30 days, etc. Now if you go by the slab rate, you'll have to pay for entire slab, irrespective of the fact that you are traveling for just 15 days. Whereas in pay-per-day basis, you will need to pay premium only for 15 days.
Today there are dozens of companies that provide travel insurance policies. You might be confused to get the right one. Before buying travel insurance policy you should keep some important considerations in mind.
Check if the travel insurance provider is offering policy with a pay-per-day facility. Going by the slab rate will add to your expenses if you are traveling for lesser number of days.
Get online quotes from different companies and then make your decision. While finalizing on any policy, don't go by the price alone. Consider the benefits and coverage as well. A policy providing less premium does not necessarily mean that it will provide you substantial coverage. You need to check if standard coverage is provided.
Read the policy document carefully before buying any travel insurance policy. Your conception should be clear as regards to the coverage, exclusions, etc. Ask all that you need to know such as: claims procedure, medical evacuation, etc.
Do not forget to ask for a specific toll free number of the provider so that you can contact them during emergencies or whenever you feel the need to.
So the next time you are planning a travel, do not forget to buy a travel insurance policy. Get a travel insurance policy before you fly and be rest assured that you'll have peace of mind, no matter what emergencies come in your way.
