All Work And No Play Is Not Ok

To take it even a step further, how many of these people do you think even make the time outside of work for the things that they really enjoy?

The United States of America is a country of workaholics. Sure, we may be suffering from an obesity epidemic at the moment, but the obesity epidemic is not necessarily indicative of us being lazy. In fact, most Americans are overweight because all they do is wake up, go to work, come home, eat dinner, go to bed and get up the next morning to do it all over again. But how many of us make time for ourselves? For most people who work full time, whether it be at an office or even if it is a work-from-home situation, they are often so mentally and physically exhausted from whatever it is that they have had to deal with at work all day that they are too tired to do much else. This is part of the reason for the poor diet (hence, the obesity). Because of poor planning and organization, because we are so tired when we get home, we often don't have the energy or mental wherewithal to make ourselves dinner! Therefore, we take what we think is the easy way out, which involves heading to the nearest fast food restaurant or heating up a frozen dinner. These foods are often high in sodium and empty calories which do little to replenish us for the next business day.

Instead of sticking to your normal, mundane routine that involves coming home and being tired all of the time, why not switch things up a bit? Make it a point to try to go to bed earlier. If you live with a boyfriend/girlfriend or husband/wife, try to see if you can get your partner on board. Depending on what time you go to work the next day, make sure that you allow yourself at least eight hours of sleep plus some extra time in the morning to work out. Contrary to popular belief, you don't need to spend four hours at the gym in order to look and feel great. Instead, did you know that you can get just as effective of a workout in only thirty minutes? Do a little research and try following a couple of 30-minute workout routines for your weekdays. Not only will it leave you feeling energized, but it will put you in a guaranteed good mood to start your day. It will also contribute to you eating healthier throughout the day as well, which can do wonders for your energy levels and overall mood and clarity.

Schedule in something fun for you to do at the end of each day- even if it is something as simple as going for a walk. Aim to make that 'something' something that involves moving your body. For example, I have recently started taking up Yoga. Not only is a great way to unwind, but it is a huge stress reliever and helps to keep me in shape. Whatever you do, plan time for fun. The same way that you would pencil in an appointment with the doctor or with a client, make an appointment with yourself. Your body (and your coworkers/partner) will thank you!
