Better Team Building Leads to Better Output

Each year organizations invest large amount of money in team building. Some are quite satisfied with the investment while others claim that it method did not show mush result. Team building involves many activities like proper team coordination, proper communication, group involvement etc. If a proper team is built, then one can be sure that the proper result can be achieved very quickly and skillfully.

  1. Teams Performance Needs: The leader of the team needs to identify what are the things that the team needs to do and also to keep in mind. It needs to have a set checklist about the things that it needs to perform everyday. This leads top proper team building.
  2. Determine the Purpose: The team needs to know its purpose for which it exists. If the team is not clear with the purpose then it will not be able to achieve its target. It is always unwise and unrealistic to put into action too many criteria into one programme. Try to focus on a few jobs, do them well in the best way possible, and establish the new or improved practices with the team before moving onto the next.
  3. Recognition and Performance Improvement: Team building events, that are done to reward the team, makes the team feel that they are given importance and their efforts are recognized. So let the team knows they are valued and their efforts appreciated. It's important to invest time in building relationships through social interaction too so do allow time for team building of this nature.
  4. Increase Insight to Improve Performance: If you want to improve performance of your team, increase the insight. The people should be practically aware of the things that need to be done. This doesn't mean you need ropes, a cliff or a kayak. Meaningful insight occurs with less adventurous and expensive activities as long as effective debriefing supports it. Debriefing is the key to deep team learning so ensure your team building dedicates time to thoroughly debriefing activities and exercises.
  5. Follow Up and Follow Through: The leader of the team should be aware of the various tasks that are being done by the team. He should keep a track of the daily duties that are being performed by each and every member so that things are done according to plan. Help them to implement new tools, new ideas, new action plans etc.
  6. Team Building is Not the Silver Bullet: Try to understand that the team building events are only a small part of the overall team development process. However you should try to invest as much time with your analysis and planning as you can. When poorly conceived, designed and executed team building can deliver a big dent in your budget for little more than a short-lived blip in morale.
