Have you even looked at the awe- inspiring photographs and portraits of great world leaders and pined to become like one of them? Napoleon, Alexander the Great, Roosevelt, Churchill, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Mother Teresa or numerous other famous personalities are embodiments of undying leadership. This quality of human beings makes adverse conditions suitable for us. Their rigidity and benevolence characters make them dear to all.
“Impossible is nothing” was a famous utterance of Napoleon. Alexander conquered most parts of the world in a period, when travel modes and travel maps were scarce. Lincoln braved his life to abolish the curse of slavery system. Mother Teresa sacrificed her pleasure home to take acre of infant children in India. Swami Vivekananda sacrificed his life in upgrading the condition of a colonized nation's society. Mahatma Gandhi helped to awake a whole country against foreign suppression trough peaceful means. The list is endless. But leadership cannot be taught through traditional education. It comes from within. Untiring spirit and steel resolution help the cause of leaders.
In today's world the importance of leadership has attained more significance than before. Organizations conduct special training sessions to empower their employees with corporate stewardship skills. There is no new course on educational leadership to properly run educational institutes. However, great leaders don't earn respect through their positions but by their abilities and traits of character. In army training, strong focus is given on protecting the lives of subordinates in the battlefields even at the cost of own lives of officers.
Following leaders blindly may sometimes spell dooms. Take the example of Adolph Hitler. He was a hero among his army battalions and even among his country people. But he was a devil for the rest of the world. His whimsical decisions brought down his once prosperous Germany. So, leaders cannot enjoy absolute power in a democratic set up. They are not gods but human beings of superior qualities. Everybody has flaws in character. The true leader is one who can accept criticism with broad mind and utilize those criticisms to improve own self. When an army unit marches towards the battlefield, it does not mind small troubles like stone pelting incidents. It has higher responsibilities to shoulder for the benefit of the country and the people. Similarly a genuine leader does not concentrate on downs of life.
However, it does not mean leadership teaches us to become selfish. On the contrary, it teaches us sacrifice small gains for larger benefits. On the sports field, a captain does not keep personal feats in mind. Rather he focuses on team performance. Becoming an ideal leader is not an easy task. Even with great intentions, a sublime heart cannot become an ideal leader, if it does not possess sufficient will power and stamina. It may break down under pressure, which can herald doom for his/her team. Intense endeavor from childhood stage helps to bring out the leadership ability of a human being.
