Satellite internet may still have a little room for improvement, but it has made some significant improvements over the past several months. Some of those improvements come in the form of a brand new communications satellite which was launched in the final months of 2011 and is the largest of its kind. In fact, this new satellite is expected to usher in a whole new day in the satellite internet industry as one that is more reliable and faster.
ViaSat, the largest satellite company in the world, launched ViaSat 1 and will follow it with ViaSat 2 in the upcoming years. However, the one bird alone is expected to bring satellite internet coverage to almost the entire United States. What is not covered will be with the launch of the second bird. In addition, many areas will see an upgrade in terms of speed and reliability from what they had before.
Having access to the internet is one of the most important things in this day in age. This is because so many things are conducted online. This includes being able to pay your bills online, shopping in stores that are located around the world, enhancing your education, and so much more. With most of the world going online, it is becoming essential to have the internet in both homes and businesses. As a result, there has been a movement in recent years to bring broadband internet to rural regions. While millions of dollars are being spent on this problem, it still remains difficult to run lines through tough geography including mountains and deserts. Therefore, the solution for many years has appeared to be using satellites and satellite dishes.
However, there have been some drawbacks when it comes to using satellite internet in the past. One problem has been the lag of the signal. While there is not much that can be done because of the extreme distance the signal must travel, ViaSat’s goal is to offer faster speeds that will make up for the lag. ViaSat’s Exede Satellite Internet Service aims at allowing customers to do everything that those with DSL or cable do, with a very little lag thanks to higher speeds and a dedicated satellite. Another drawback that has existed in the past has had to do with the weather. Satellite internet service has always been susceptible to heavy rain which can disrupt the signal. However, ViaSat claims that their new technology helps to greatly reduce rain fade and will keep the signal strong no matter what the weather brings. In addition, satellite internet service has always been expensive, but ViaSat is providing customers with three different tiers of service which will make it affordable to just about everyone. The nice thing will also be that there will be no difference in speed depending on what service you choose. The only difference will come in how much data you can upload and download over the course of a month.
All of these changes make for a very exciting time in the satellite internet industry.
