Using The Internet To Find Our Ancestors

We all know our immediate family, but what about those who came centuries and decades before us.  For some, the pull of wanting to find out more about our ancestors is very strong. For those people, the internet has been a great tool in order to learn more about our ancestors.

There are several reasons why we may want to learn more about those who have come before us.  For some, it is just a matter of curiosity to see who we may be related to.  Some people may want to see if they are related to any famous actors, big named politicians, prominent people or inventors.  For others, it may be a matter of health concerns.  Some people may want to know more about the way their ancestors died in order to get a better idea if there is a history of heart disease or maybe a certain type of cancer.  In addition, some people may have been adopted, but then discovered the names of their birth parents.  For some, it is only natural to keep digging and to find out all that they can about their natural families.

The internet has completely changed the way that we can search for information on our ancestors.  It has dramatically simplified things and put a lot of information in one location which makes it easier to find the details.  There are also now numerous sites such as Ancestry.com which can help make the process of finding your ancestors much easier.

The art of finding your ancestors used to involve visiting libraries and archives.  Today, much of the same information has been scanned and put on the internet making searching for ancestors much easier than ever before. This information can now be located with just a few clicks of the mouse.

However, you do have to have a starting point when it comes to searching for those who have come before us.  The easiest thing to do is to start with your state’s department of vital statistics and begin with your own birth.  Once, you have your parent’s birthplace then look for your grandparent’s birth, marriage and death records.  You can then keep tracing this information further and further back.

Finding your ancestors is somewhat of a treasure hunt and you are never quite sure what you are going to find.  The internet, however, has streamlined the whole process and made it easier for anyone to find out more about our own families.  As the internet continues to grow and expand, there will be even more documents added to the information superhighway.  In addition, there will also be more people with access to the internet in order to find out more about their families.

Even for those who aren’t computer literate, you can still use the numerous ancestry programs available online.  These will take you through the process in a step by step manner so that you won’t miss anything along with way.

Next time, you are curious about your family, turn to the internet first.
