Importance of Oral Hygiene

Oral hygiene is not only important for bad breath but also to avoid dental infection's and gum inflations. Teeth help us to chew, digest, to talk and most important it gives a structure to our face and smile. Thus is very essential to take care of your teeth.

Things that you should keep in mind to maintain oral hygiene.

Teeth should be cleaned regularly to avoid bacterial plaque, cavities and gum infection. It is recommended by the dentist that we get our teeth cleaned by professionals at least twice a year. It is important to go to the professionals because it is not possible to maintain a proper oral hygiene just by brushing and flossing at home. Professional cleaning includes tooth scaling, polishing, and removal of tartar which is the formation of yellowish brown substance caused due to bacterial deposit. The treatment is followed by a fluoride treatment. It is essential to take care of your teeth even with professional help. Brush your teeth after every mean or at least twice a day, floss before sleeping to prevent the deposit of food and thus avoid plaque on the teeth.

Inter dental brushes are also available for dental hygiene. It is in fact considered much better than flossing. These brushes are available in the market and in various sizes according to the size that best suits you inter dental space between your teeth.

Dentists always stress on tongue cleaning. Our tongue has a high protein surface and thus provides a base for bacteria’s, oral fungi decaying food particles and dead sells. All this leads to bad breath and lead to tooth and gum infections. Thus it is highly essential to invest in a good quality tongue cleaner to maintain proper dental hygiene.

Flossing before bed is a must. It helps remove food particles and bacterial plaque from between the teeth where the brush can not reach. If these decaying particles and plaque are not removed it can lead to gum infections, inflammation, irritation and cavities. Also add a little massaging of the gum. For some people it is important to floss after every mean so be sure to check with your dentist.

Oral irrigation is another very effective method of maintaining oral hygiene. It is the method of using water jets to remove food particles and any bacterial formation. It is found to be much more effective than dental floss because it helps removes particles which can not be reached by brushing or flossing. It can even reach a few mille meters under the gum line so the plaque and tartar are removed.

Vitamins and minerals help in healthy teeth. What better way than vitamin and minerals rich food. Breads and cereals are rich in vitamin B and fruits and vegetables contain vitamin C both help in healthy gums. Meat, fish and poultry are rich in magnesium and zinc which are good for the teeth.

Sugar free Chewing gum also helps keeping teeth clean. Sugar free chewing gums help simulate saliva, which helps in balancing the acid in the mouth caused by plaque and helps removing the leftover food particles from the teeth.

Most of us either forget or are in situations when we can not rinse our moth after little munching, the left over food particles act as a base for bacteria’s and they feed on them and produce acids. Thus chewing gum acts as a cleanser for the mouth. Sugar free Chewing gums are also beneficial for stress and to improve concentration.
