Leather sofas are classic furnishings that are functional and beautiful. It is easy to maintain and keep leather furniture clean but sometimes it can’t be avoided when these furniture pieces get dirty or stained. You can prevent this from happening by being extra careful about things you put on it, where you put it, and what protective solutions you use on it.
If your sofa was stained with ink from a pen, you can still take steps to remove the stain. Ink marks are difficult to remove from leather surfaces or any surface for that matter. To get rid of ink stains on your leather couch, you’ll need a few things such as a leather cleaner, shampoo, cotton swabs and a soft clean rag. Work on removing the ink stain as soon as you notice it on your couch.
Dry ink will be harder to remove than one that is still a bit moist and fresh. Act quickly by blotting out the ink with cotton or a soft rag. Grab another piece of cloth and moisten it a bit. Rub the moist cloth on the surface in circular motions. Dry it with another soft rag. If the stain is still visible, you can try another technique using saddle soap or leather cleaner.
Read the directions on the leather cleaner label and follow it to the letter. Make sure you are using it on the appropriate kind of leather furniture. Some leather sofas are dyed with color. Make sure the leather cleaner or saddle soap will not make the tint on your ouch fade. You can also try removing the ink with a mixture of warm water and some regular shampoo you would typically use on normal hair.
If you still can’t remove the ink marks, call the manufacturer of your couch and ask about appropriate cleaning solutions you can use to get rid of the stains. The manufacturer might also sell stain removers that are more effective for the kind of sofa they sold to you. Old traditional methods include using a solution of milk or tomato to remove ink stains.
According to tradition, you are supposed to rub the milk or a halved tomato into the stain. Using tomatoes can be tricky since they are acidic and may get rid of inks stains but damage your leather couch just the same. Rinse your leather furniture well after using these remedies. Do not use just any kind of detergent or cleaning solution on leather sofas.
Some soaps or cleaners can be too strong or harmful to leather surfaces. You don’t want to risk making the stain worse or removing the color tinted into the leather. After you get the ink stains out, thoroughly clean your leather couch. After cleaning it, apply a coat of leather conditioner. Let this coating dry before applying some leather protectant or sealant.
A protectant can make your furniture resistant to liquid spills, food stains and other types of dirt but will not make your leather become water-proof or stain-proof. It is still best practice to keep dangerous things away from your sofa such as ink pens, food and beverages.
