Leather furniture can lose their lustre over time. Scratches, stains and simple wear and tear can cause leather sofas to look worn out. Even sunlight that hits your sofa recliner can make it look faded and old. You can practice basic leather care to prevent signs on aging on your couch.
Cleaning your sofa and getting rid of stains right away will let your couch look fresh. You should clean your sofa with the appropriate leather cleaners at least once a month and wipe it down with a damp cloth once a week. After cleaning the surface, apply a leather conditioner or protective sealant to it to make it resistant to stains. The conditioner also makes the leather look shinny and new.
If your leather couch still looks old and faded after you clean and condition it. You can bring back the old lustre by repairing the discoloration on the surface. To do this, you will need leather colorant, a sponge, cloth, and rubber gloves to protect your hands from the colorant. To begin restoring your leather furniture, you should wear your gloves before you begin to handle the colorant.
Shake the bottle that contains the leather colorant. Read the instructions on the label and take not how much shaking you should do. Many brands recommend shaking the colorant for a full 3 minutes. It is important to shake the bottle well to avoid color streaks on your leather sofas once the liquid is applied.
You should first apply a small spot of colorant to a hidden part of your sofa recliner to test the effect. Try applying it in a hidden area in the portions of the recliner that cannot be seen when the recliner is upright. Let it dry first and check it before proceeding to dye the entire couch or recliner. See if the color matches the original dye of your furniture.
Replace the colorant if the shade does not match. After finding the right color, apply a thin coating of the colorant to the damaged or faded part of your sofa. You can use a damp sponge to apply the dye. Press the sponge on the damaged leather surface and observe for uneven blemishes or cracks. Use a clean rag to remove excess colorant. Use gentle motions so you don’t remove too much color.
Let the leather dry completely. You can use a blow dryer to dry it faster. Don’t push the couch to a sunny area to dry it because the UV rays can make the colors uneven or make it fade to a lighter shade. You will need to apply a second coat of the colorant. You can use a spray type of dye for the second coat if you prefer or stick to the original colorant.
Practice spraying the colorant into paper before directing the nozzle into your leather furniture. The first few sprays will be uneven with splatters and uneven thickness. Once the spray is evenly distributed, direct the nozzle towards your sofa recliner or couch. Apply the pray carefully to avoid drips and splatters on the surface of your leather sofas. Let the surface dry completely.
