One of the services most successful on the Internet has been the World Wide Web (WWW or "the Website"), to the extent that it is common confusion between the two. The WWW is a set of protocols that allows a simple, remote consultation files of hypertext . This was a later development ( 1990 ) and uses the Internet as the transmission medium.
There are, therefore, many other Internet services and protocols, apart from the Web, sending e-mail ( SMTP ), file transfer ( FTP and P2P ), the online chat ( IRC ), the instant messaging and presence The transmission of multimedia content and communication - telephony ( VoIP ), television ( IPTV ) - the electronic newsletter ( NNTP ), the remote access to other devices ( SSH and Telnet ) or online games .
The gender of the word Internet is ambiguous, according to the Spanish language dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy .
History
Its origins date back to the 1960s, within ARPA (now DARPA), in response to the need for this organization to find better ways to use computers at the time, but faced with the problem of leading researchers and laboratories wishing have their own computers, which was not only more expensive but that caused a duplication of efforts and resources. 5 Thus was born ARPAnet (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network or Network Agency Advanced Research Projects United States) bequeathed to us the layout of an initial network of high-speed communications which were integrating other government and academic networks in the 70's.
Researchers, scientists, teachers and students benefited from communication with other institutions and colleagues in their field, as well as the possibility of consulting the information available in other academic and research centers. Similarly, enjoyed the new ability to publish and make available to other information generated in their activities.
In July 1961 Leonard Kleinrock at MIT published the first paper on packet switching theory. Kleinrock convinced Roberts Lawrence theoretical feasibility of communications using packets rather than circuits, which proved to be a breakthrough on the road network computer work. The other key step was to make computers talk to each other. To explore this field in 1965 , Roberts connected a Massachusetts computer TX2 with a Q-32 in California through a switched telephone line low speed, thus creating the first (albeit small) computer network ever built wide area.
1969 : The first interconnected born on November 21 of 1969 , when you create the first link between UCLA and Stanford universities through the switched telephone line, and thanks to the work and previous studies by various scientists and organizations since 1959 ( see: Arpanet ). The myth of the ARPANET, the first network was built simply to survive nuclear attacks remains very popular. However, this was not the only reason. While the ARPANET was designed to survive network failures, the real reason for this was that the switching nodes were unreliable.
