Pulsar is a bike that has completely changed the fortunes of the two - wheeler maker Bajaj in the Indian market. Earlier the company was lagging behind in sales volumes. The market leader Hero Honda was far ahead of the company in terms of both sales and image. Then Bajaj engineers came up with a new bike Pulsar in November 2001. The bike made a great first impression due to its sporty looks. The 150cc bike soon became very popular among young bike buyers especially due to its sporty looks and styling. The bike started to sell in great volumes and soon became the best selling bike of Bajaj Auto. Pulsar is a performance bike. It has less fuel economy compared to best selling bikes like Hero Honda Splendor or Passion Plus, but it has more power and it gives the pleasure of biking. The engineers of Bajaj had made attempts to make it look like a sports bike.

Later Bajaj Auto came up with new versions of Pulsar with more stylish looks and its patented DTS - i technology. The sales of Pulsar insured that the company soon became India' no. 2 bike maker, even getting close to the world's largest bike maker Hero Honda. The success of Pulsar inspired engineers of Bajaj to come up with a bike with more power. Soon, the company came up with 180cc and 220 cc versions of Pulsar. These machines had more power and stylish looks.

The success of Pulsar has changed the Indian bike market for ever. Earlier bike makers used to be focused on only entry level bikes, thinking that there is demand for only cheaper bikes with fuel economy. The tremendous market response to Pulsar showed to them that there is a growing segment of young bike buyers who are willing to pay more for a power bike even if it is expensive and has less fuel economy. Soon, other bike makers came up with their own power bikes.
