Fondly referred to as the youthful star of Indian movie industry, Dev Anand is one talented actor who attracted a lot of film going public. Other than being an amazing actor, he was also a film maker and a producer. He was born in Gurdaspur District and has the notable film makers Chetan Anand and Vijay Anand as his brothers. His sister Sheel Kanta Kapur is mother of the internationally acclaimed film director, Shekhar Kapur.
His contribution, love and dedication towards Indian cinema made the Indian Government present him the prestigious Padma Bhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke Award. He was working at the military office before he started acting. Hum Ek Hain was his first movie. But, Ziddi was the first movie, which gave him a break. He acted along with Kamini Kaushal in this movie, which was a huge success. When this movie succeeded, Dev Anand turned into a producer in '49 and established his production house, Navketan.
Choosing Guru Dutt, to direct his film Baazi, was a right decision, as the film turned out to be a great success. Taxi Driver released in 1952 was also a blockbuster. He wedded Kalpana Kartik, with whom he acted in this film.
He became popular with his fans, for his distinctive way of dialogue delivery and head nods. His film career continued to flourish during the '50s with films like Kala Pani and Insaniyat. For his acting in Kala Pani, Dev Anand was awarded the Best Actor's trophy. Six films became mega hits in which he acted with Suraiya.
He worked with Waheeda Rehman in the film Guide, which was Dev Anand's debut color movie. The story of this movie is an adaptation of a novel penned by R K Narayan, noted writer. Dev Anand got critical acclaim for this film because he played a character who moves through various emotions like greed, romance, humor and salvation.
He reunited with Vijay Anand to make Jewel Thief, which had charming, talented and glamorous ladies like Tanuja, Vyjanthimala, Faryal, Helen and Anju Mahendru, who ruled the industry. Johnny Mera Naam, which also was a result of their reunification, was an excellent success. He became a director with the movie Hare Rama Hare Krishna, which had the sensuous actress, Zeenat Aman. Yet another actress who was launched by Dev Anand was Tina Munim.
