An American crime fiction show in the 1960’s kept audiences enthralled, and they stuck to their television sets because the show was such a delight. The production was a contrast from any detective classification before it, the reason being that it gave the viewers a glimpse of a fellow identified as Lieutenant Columbo. Manslaughter incidents were often investigated by Columbo—played by Peter Falk—an investigator with the Los Angeles Police Department. It was set up by Richard Levinson and William Link.
The criminal of each episode is shown committing the crime at the start of the program, a feature of the Colombo TV series that differed from the other private-eye shows that followed the traditional whodunit storytelling format. In a nutshell, the format of the show follows how Lieutenant Colombo figures out who the culprit is, and how the criminal is then brought to justice. The episodes were in such a great, successful format that the originator of the television program once pictured it as a howdhecatchem.
Lieutenant Colombo was different because the Columbo TV series concentrated on the personalities involved, the intricate manner the crime was carried out, the insidious personality of the killer, his relation with the fatality, and the little information that leads to the criminal’s capture. Columbo also highlighted a rich secondary cast, which was conventionally lacking in other programs at the time.
As for the character itself; Peter Falk does a remarkable job in his portrayal of the ungroomed, disorganized man. It’s of no surprise that viewers liked this innocent-looking beat cop sleuth who was generally underestimated by both his colleagues and enemies alike. Columbo, to the murderers, was considered as merely just another bothersome intruder. Unknown to them, Columbo is, in fact a brilliant and accurate private investigator who subverts them in the end. Columbo had a animated eye for information, and fastidiously gathered specifics to catch the criminals.
The peculiar, at times irregular, at times excellent, depiction of Columbo was perhaps chiefly the reason why the audience admired the series. One thing noticeable about Lieutenant Columbo is that he is precisely serene towards his quarries; some non-dubious witnesses, though, once received the bad end of his ire, during a rare moment of exasperation.
Unlike the rugged image that other law enforcement personalities tend to portray however, Lieutenant Colombo usually plays the exact opposite, with his busybody presence combining well with his mild-mannered gentle spirit. This breezy civil servant controls his inquisition tacitly, and his quarry frequently becomes muddled with the way he is being interrogated. As Columbo starts to put the pressure around him, the criminal soon finds himself more and more agitated. In other words, antagonists often discern belatedly that this nondescript detective is a force to reckon with. When the evidence weighs heavily on him, he ends up with no other recourse but to confess his liability.
The Columbo TV series officially came to an end in 2003 after it had a tremendously successful period of years. As the seventh Greatest TV Characters as rated by TV Guide in its All Time list, TV’s Peter Falk gave justice to the character of Lieutenant Columbo, earning him the title one of the most impressive investigators in fictional history.
