Sardinia boasts of some of the most ancient remnants of human history. Very close to its Latin meaning, “the barbarian region,” this area still remains mostly uninhabited, but the shepherd tradition continues as it has for thousands of years.
Across the island lie the dark slopes of the Gannargentu which remains covered with snow all year long, even on the hottest summer day. The inhabitants follow the religious tradition and celebrate ancient festivals with sober processions. Sardinia’s topography has a variation from Limestone Mountains in the east, sand dunes in the west and beautiful beaches to the north and south, perfect for all ages, including young children.
The beaches in Sardinia are extremely clean both in terms of the beach itself and in the quality of the water. It also provides facilities for water sports most coasts during summer, including waterskiing and windsurfing. Sardinia is also considered to be the best location in the Mediterranean for diving. There are some very good beaches around Sardinia which can be categorized into the following on the basis of their location.
The north east coast of Sardinia boasts of beaches which are a mix of hidden bays and popular haunts. Some of the beaches in this part of Sardinia are Santa Teresa which provides a beautiful view of the strait of Bonifacio as one heads to Capo Testa to the west. Another one is Arzachena which is the abode of magnificent sandy beaches surrounded by pine trees and the beaches of Costa Smeralda.
Northwards from the town of Alghero, there is a group of very excellent beaches. The Maria Pia beach in Alghero is a sandy bay surrounded by pinewoods. There are some more beaches further around the bay of Alghero and around Porto Conte bay and beyond it.
In the south west the Sulcis Iglesiente has a stretch of 200km of coastline and another 200 km in south east. Both give a wide choice of beautiful beaches. The beaches in south west coast are comparatively underdeveloped compared to other parts of the island. The south east coast is more developed with some summer residential areas. Nora beach is an enjoyable sandy beach which extends south of the Roman ruins of Nora. It has been a well liked destination for the town folk of Pula.
